EDMONTON – Zac Valentine is back where it all started.
The 19-year-old Edmontonian is suiting up for Team Canada II at the IFAF (International Federation of American Football) U-20 championships, as the Canadians look to win their third consecutive title.
Away from the tournament, Valentine currently plies his trade for the University of Guelph Gryphons, but his football playing career began with the Green and Gold. His first foray into football came as a part of the EE Flag Football program more than a decade ago.
“I started playing football when I was probably about six or seven. I played with the flag program here at Commonwealth,” Valentine said. “I really just fell in love with the game. Then I went up, played tackle football with the Edmonton Mustangs minor football program, then I went to Harry Ainley Highschool, and now I play at the University of Guelph.”
It was with EE Flag Football that Valentine fell in love with the game of football. The program included coaching from University of Alberta Golden Bears players and guest coaching from members of the Green and Gold.
“It was a long time ago, but I loved it. I got the ball a lot. I played offense and defense,” Valentine said. “The flag program really helps you kind of develop your football skills, tackling, and all that stuff.”

The Canada II side that Valentine plays defensive back and special teams for just wrapped up the round-robin portion of the tournament with a 63-7 victory over Team Brazil. Valentine’s tournament experience will culminate on Sunday when the U-20 tournament champion is crowned. The Gold Medal Game will take place at Commonwealth Stadium at 5:00 p.m. (tickets for the event can be purchased here), but the Canada II will likely finish off at Clarke on the Sunday (Full Schedule).
Although Valentine is not part of the Canada side looking for a three-peat, it was an incredible experience representing his country, while playing the game he loves. It was an opportunity that started from humble beginnings with the EE Flag Football program, but has grown into so much more through passion and hard work.
“Honestly, it’s awesome. I love doing it. I love wearing the flag on my jersey. It’s really cool to see playing Brazil, Panama, Austria, all those cool countries like that,” Valentine said. “It’s nice to know you’re backed by a whole country. I hope this tournament honestly gets more traction. More teams join and more players join in the future.”
