Eskimos quarterback Trevor Harris may have helped the Eskimos when he passed for 430 yards on Friday against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, but his own pocketbook is a little lighter.
Harris recently came up a plan to donate $300 to the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation every time he passes for 300 or more yards.
“A big deal for me is childhood sickness and children’s hospital things,” Harris said. “I want to be able to give back to kids. It goes back to my Christian faith.
“I want to make sure that I’m giving back to the community in any way that I can,” he continued. “I just thought it’d be cool thing to do the $300 for 300. Hopefully, we can do some more in the future and figure out some more things and more ways to give back, but this is just the start.”
Harris, 33, has never previously tied a personal fundraiser to his performance.
“My wife (Kalie) and I talked about it, so we went with it and we’re just excited to kick this off,” he said.
Based on his playing history, Harris knows the promotion is likely to cost him about $1,500. He passed for at least 300 yards five times during the first nine games of the season, including each of the last four games.
He also passed for at least 300 yards 11 times in 17 games in 2018, 10 times in 15 games in 2017 and five times in 12 games in 2016 with the Ottawa RedBlacks.
