(Edmonton) The Edmonton Eskimos today announced plans to host the first annual Northern Alberta Football Summit as part of their Coaches Clinic next weekend at Commonwealth Stadium.
Len Rhodes assumed the President and CEO position with the Eskimos at the end of 2011, and made a commitment to increase the club’s support of amateur football in Edmonton and the Northern Alberta region.
Last season, the Eskimos invested in an automated 50/50 system which generated significantly more funds which resulted in being able to direct, through last year’s 50/50 program, $450,000 to support amateur football across Northern Alberta.
Rhodes also identified the need to form a Football Summit to create alignment across all football stakeholders in Northern Alberta, with the overall objective to help build a more competitive amateur football environment regionally.
Eskimo General Manager Ed Hervey initiated plans for the summit along with other stakeholders involved in football in our area. The initial work was done in order to activate a summit this spring and the invitation to all regional stakeholders has been received with enthusiastic support.
Hervey commented on the Summit, “Getting this group of people together to discuss and plan something as important as this is a critical first step. The Eskimos, the Golden Bears, Football Alberta and others will help to lead this project and, hopefully, the other leaders involved in football in Alberta will also become keenly interested in making the players better and the coaches to become better coaches. The summit is a first step, but it’s an important step.”
The invitation-only Football Summit will be held on March 15, 2013 at Commonwealth Stadium. Key football stakeholders including Chris Morris and Rick Walters (University of Alberta), Tim Enger (Football Alberta) and Ed Jones and Hector Pothier (Eskimo Alumni) will have a preliminary meeting to discuss player development in Northern Alberta across all levels of football (minor, high school, junior, university and professional).
The Eskimos remain committed to helping create a strong football community by supporting the Eskimo greats of the past and creating a solid platform for training, coaching and developing the stars of tomorrow.
