(Edmonton) The Eskimos held their 48th Annual Fundraising Dinner Tuesday night at the Shaw Conference Centre. The full house was treated to a night of Eskimo players past and present as we celebrated our 13 Grey Cup championships.
Head Coach Kavis Reed kicked off the night by introducing the entire 2012 line-up, followed by three performances by our world-class Cheer Team.
Mark Scholz hosted the evening which included greetings from Board of Directors Chairman Allan Sawin and President & CEO Len Rhodes.
Former receiver Ed Hervey presented the David Boone Award to fullback Mathieu Bertrand for his dedication to the Edmonton community this past year. Bertrand was active in many Eskimo community initiatives including the popular Playbook for Success program which teaches kids the importance of education and making good decisions.
Eskimos TJ Hill, Cary Koch and Burke Dales amused the crowd with an improv skit led by Kory Mathewson from Atomic Improv. The theme was “A Day in the Life of TJ Hill” and they took the opportunity to poke fun at teammates Lee Robinson, Rod Williams and Chris Thompson.
Edmonton Huskies defensive back Reid Knox won the Edmonton Sun’s Wes Montgomery Award which recognizes achievement in junior football and academics.
An amazing Grey Cup history video highlighting all 13 Eskimo Grey Cup victories led to the feature of the evening. An array of Eskimo greats, representing all of the Grey Cup winning eras, joined host John Sexsmith on stage for a ‘hot stove’ discussion. Bill Smith, Warren Moon, Damon Allen, Henry ‘Gizmo’ Williams, Sean Fleming, Ed Hervey and Shannon Garrett reminisced about their Grey Cup victories and spoke about what it means to be an Eskimo.
They drew laughter from the crowd with stories about all the interesting people (and a cow named Rosemary!) who have taken a drink out of the Cup, the coldest games they ever played in, and how Gizmo wrote his stats on his arm during the games so he knew when he got to 100 yards and was done for the day.
Stay tuned to esks.com in the coming days for a recap video of the evening.
