(Edmonton) – The women of Eskimo football raised $73,900 for ovarian cancer research on Monday at the Eskimo Women’s Dinner, presented by Prism Flow Products, bringing the event’s grand total to over $270,000 raised since it began in 2007.
The evening included a champagne reception in the locker room, silent auction and dinner program celebrating contributions of the women of the Eskimo Empire. The Eskimo Women’s Dinner began in memory of friend and 21-year Eskimo employee Pam Monastyrskyj, who lost her battle with ovarian cancer two years earlier. In 2008, the Edmonton Eskimo Women’s Ovarian Cancer Research Endowment Fund was set up to provide long-term, sustainable funding for researchers at the Lois Hole Hospital for Women.
“When we think of outstanding community support for the Lois Hole Hospital for Women and the cancer research and surgeries that take place here, there is no better example than the women of the Eskimo Empire,” says Sharlene Rutherford, vice president of the Royal Alexandra Hospital Foundation. “For a fifth year, the Eskimo women have created a magical evening that not only showcases our football team, it fundraises for ovarian cancer research right here in our city. Last night was another win and we extend our most sincere thanks.”
Additional funds will be raised through other initiatives, including upcoming Movemeber activities and those at last Saturday’s game when the Eskimos defeated the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Pink, the colour synonymous with women’s cancer, was featured prominently on field and in stadium, including a pink team logo at centre field, pink equipment for players, pink apparel for coaches and sideline staff and the sale of limited edition pink merchandise.
