Eskimos get away during bye week

They’ll likely have a short bye week, but a number of Eskimos will use their free time to reconnect with friends and family at home.

“Just go home, spend a few days with the family and get some good seafood,” Eskimo slotback Fred Stamps said of his plans to return to New Orleans. “Crawfish, fried catfish, stuff like that. There’s nothing like that Mississippi River cat.”

Eskimo tailback Hugh Charles went straight from a bruising 76-yard rushing, 37-yard receiving night on Thursday to the serenity of the links. An avid golfer, Charles planned to hit Sylvan Lake on his way to Banff this week, with nothing but golf on his mind.

“(I’ll) get about 36 holes in. I love it,” he said. Charles will play this week alongside longsnapper Ryan King and punter Burke Dales. Living in Texas in the off-season, Charles said he golfs year-round.

“(Golf) definitely takes patience, but I have a lot of patience because also back home I fish a lot, and you definitely have to have patience for fishing.

“I just like to be all-around, I don’t want to be a couch potato or playing video games. I’ll always be on the links, skiing or fishing,” he said.

Cary Koch will be in the mountains this week as well, doing some sightseeing. The Eskimo receiver is a newlywed and plans to take in the Rocky Mountains with his wife for the first time.

“(We wanted) to see what else Canada has to offer,” he said. “It should be fun. I’ve heard a lot about it and was going to regret not going to visit it, if I left here without seeing it.”
