(Edmonton) The Edmonton Eskimos have signed import defensive back Rico Murray, import defensive back Denatay Heard, and import defensive lineman Almondo Sewell, the club announced today.
Murray signed with the Cincinnati Bengals as an undrafted free agent in 2009; he appeared in nine games over the past three seasons recording 19 tackles (17 solo), and two pass deflections.
Heard played nine games over two seasons (2008-2009) with the Saskatchewan Roughriders, posting nine defensive tackles and one interception. He also saw limited action as a kick and punt returner during his time with the ‘Riders. Heard signed as a free agent with Toronto in 2010 but did not play in the regular season.
Sewell (pronounced: SEE-well) is just the second player in Akron history to be named a three time All-Mid-American Conference honoree. In four seasons (2007-’09) with the Zips, Sewell registered 223 tackles. He comes from playing the first part of the 2012 AFL season with the Cleveland Gladiators; although he has played games with Cleveland this year, players in this league are able to leave immediately when they have CFL or NFL offers.
Edmonton Eskimo General Manager Eric Tillman says, “We’ve had some roster attrition, which is the norm in training camp, and feel fortunate to add these three young men. Almondo and Denatay were with our club briefly last year; and, in Rico, we feel we are adding a very versatile defender. He played nine games with the Bengals over the previous three seasons at cornerback, but Rico will initially work at halfback and the sam linebacker position, which is really an extra defensive back.”
