(Edmonton) The Edmonton Eskimos and Football Alberta announced today that they will be launching a new novice football league. The league will be a flag football league for ages 6-8 years old dealing with developing an entry level version of football for kids at a younger age.
The league will consist of 160 players broken into 16 teams of ten players; the league will be broken down into two divisions of eight teams each. Both divisions will be named after a former Eskimo great, and the teams will take on the names of the eight CFL teams, as well as wearing their colors.
The program hopes to extend its boundaries and broaden the participation, while aiming for around 25 percent of the enrollment to be female. The “season” will start on Saturday, September 8 with a two to three hour skill session for all players where they would be evaluated on their abilities then sorted into teams post-session. The beginning of the regular season will kick-off the following Saturday, September 15, 2012.
The layout of the season will consist of each team playing each other once with the final week concluding as a playoff week where they will play against the closest team to them in the standings to bring out the best competition in the last week of play. In total the season will amount to a nine week experience and the fee will be $150 per player which will cover the costs associated with running the league.
All events of this program will take part at the Field House in the Commonwealth Stadium Fitness & Recreation Centre. The long-term goal of this project is to expand the number of participants and secure other facilities, and potentially run a spring component for older players.
