(Edmonton) Oilers-Eskimos stage historic match for ultimate bragging rights
The Edmonton Oilers and Edmonton Eskimos have agreed to square off in a historic match for ultimate bragging rights in the City of Champions. The two teams will go head to head in a unique two-game total-point series to determine the winner of the Edmonton Cup.
Game 1 will see both squads suit up for hockey at Rexall Place June 7 while Game 2 will be football at
Commonwealth Stadium June 29. The team with the highest combined number of goals and points will be crowned champion the next day at the Esks’ home opener.
“We issued the challenge to the Eskimos because, simply, this is what people want – fans have been demanding this for decades,” said Edmonton Oilers President and COO Patrick LaForge. “This is going to be a monumental sporting event in a city that is already rich in sporting traditions.”
“We are thrilled to accept the challenge – even though our first concern was the safety of their players,” responded Edmonton Eskimos President and CEO Len Rhodes. “But there was no way we were going to turn down this challenge.”
“We can likely score every thirty seconds, so one hundred goals is not out of the question,” said Oilers forward Darcy Hordichuk, who was an all-star quarterback in high school. “And with our athletic ability, we can keep to within 30 points of them at Commonwealth.”
“The Oilers don’t realize I was called The Wall when I used to play goal,” countered Eskimos centre
Gord Hinse. “I will stone them on the ice while we run up the score on the turf.”
Everyone in both organizations feel this novel concept is a template that could be used for similar matches in other markets across North America. They also agree the big winner at the end of the day is the community, as the losing team will make a ten thousand dollar donation to the Boys and Girls Clubs of Edmonton.
Ticket information for the Edmonton Cup will be announced later this week.
