(Edmonton) The popular Playbook for Success program kicked off with players visiting three schools today. Several Eskimo players will be out at schools all over the city this spring to talk to kids about the importance of education.
Formerly known as the Stay in School program, Playbook for Success has been a mainstay among the Eskimo community relations initiatives for over 15 years. Players visit Edmonton-area elementary schools to stress the importance of education, goal-setting and striving to be your best.
A veteran of the Playbook for Success program, Eskimo fullback Mathieu Bertrand is helping mentor some of the Eskimo players new to the program this year. Bertrand feels the kids benefit from having football players come to speak with them. “It’s always fun. I remember as a kid professional athletes coming in and listening to them. Plus it’s a good thing for the kids. Instead of being in class, they get to listen to somebody else. It’s different for them.”
Bertrand and teammates Gord Hinse, Étienne Légaré, Calvin McCarty and Marcus Howard will be brining their message to schools all over Edmonton this week. More players are expected to join the line-up as the program continues throughout the spring.
Eskimo players visited 58 area schools last year as part of the Playbook for Success program.
