Esks mourn the passing of Steve Mendryk (October 1, 1928 – November 17, 2011)

(Edmonton)  Dr. Stephen Mendryk, a member of the Edmonton Eskimo dynasty teams of the 1950’s, has died in Edmonton after a lengthy illness.

Born in Edmonton’s McCauley district, Mendryk was a true multi-sport star, excelling in hockey, wrestling, basketball and football.  A member of the University of Alberta and Edmonton Sports Halls of Fame, Mendryk played nine seasons for the Esks (1949 – 1956, 1958).  As a member of Edmonton’s Grey Cup winning squads of  1954, ’55 and ’56, Mendryk has also been inducted into the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame.

Mendryk went on to a distinguished academic career, receiving a Masters degree from Berkeley and his PH.D (Physical Education) from Oregon.  He would become a highly regarded professor at the University of Alberta.     

Dr.Mendryk is survived by his wife Jeanne and three children, daughter Marlene Ferguson and son Wayne Mendryk of Edmonton and daughter Michelle Ryan of Hamilton.

A memorial for Dr. Mendryk will take place Thursday, November 24th in St. Albert, AB.
