(Edmonton) Former Eskimo quarterback Damon Allen will be inducted to the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 2012. The class was announced today on TSN during its broadcast of the CFL game between the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and Montreal Alouettes.
Allen began his career in Edmonton in 1985 and led the Esks to a Grey Cup Championship over Toronto in 1987. He was named the Grey Cup’s Most Valuable Player in the game, where he replaced injured starter Matt Dunigan.
After stints in Ottawa and Hamilton, Damon returned to Edmonton in 1993 and won his second Grey Cup and Grey Cup MVP honour in a 33-23 victory over Winnipeg.
Damon holds several CFL records including All-Time Rushing Yards by a Quarterback (11,920). He was Pro-Football’s All-Time Passing Leader (72,381 yards) until that mark was surpassed last weekend by Montreal’s Anthony Calvillo.
Allen played 23 seasons in the CFL with Edmonton, Ottawa, Hamilton, Memphis, BC and Toronto and is a four-time Grey Cup champion, two-time Grey Cup MVP, Grey Cup Offensive Player of the Game, an East Division and CFL All-Star and was the 2005 CFL Most Outstanding Player.
Allen is joined by fellow inductees Jack Abendschan, Tyrone Jones, Eric Lapointe, Milt Stegall, David Braley and Peter Connellan.
