Kabongo meets… Kabongo

September 2, 2011

(Edmonton) This morning the Edmonton Humane Society (EHS) kicked off its “Feline Football Fever” cat adoption event in tune with the upcoming “Battle of Alberta” football games.

Eskimo offensive lineman Patrick Kabongo was at the EHS shelter on Friday, September 2, between 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. to choose which cat he would like the Society to name after him as part of the upcoming adoption event.

On September 6, 7, & 8 the EHS will waive the adoption fee on its available cats in an effort to encourage people to turn to the shelter first in their search for a pet.  Currently, about 75% of the animals in the care of the Edmonton Humane Society are felines and there is no kennel space available at the shelter for any new felines surrendered by their owners.

During the three day event, felines will be named after Edmonton Eskimo players and members of the Eskimo Cheer Team.  The adoption incentives will be as follows:

Team Tuesday (Sept. 6):  All cats over 6 months old with an Eskimo football player’s name will have their adoption fees waived.

Cheer Wednesday (Sept. 7):  All cats over 6 months old with an Eskimos Cheer Team member’s name will have their adoption fees waived.

Touchdown Thursday (Sept. 8):  All remaining cats over 6 months old will have their fees waived.  All kittens under 6 months old will go home at either 50% or 100% off the adoption fee (play the “colored ball game” and win the discount.)

The public can help off-set the financial loss and help the Society to continue to save lives by sponsoring the adoption fee of one of the featured cats, if they cannot adopt one themselves.  Anyone who sponsors a cat for $130 will have their name displayed on the pet portfolio for that cat, provided the sponsorship is received by 12:00 p.m. on Monday, September 5. The person’s name will also appear on the Feline Football Fever page of the Society’s website for a week after the event. Sponsorships are tax-deductible and can be arranged on-line at www.edmontonhumanesociety.com or by calling 780-491-3507.

The Society’s adoption process does not change for feline adoption events. Adopters will still be required to fill out a questionnaire regarding their lifestyle and expectations of pet ownership, and will then go through an adoption interview.  Anyone considering adopting on the featured days should allow themselves approximately 3 hours in the shelter.
