(Edmonton) The Edmonton Eskimos announced today that five players did not pass their medicals and have been released from the club. Import receiver Jason Barnes, non-import defensive back Saleem Borhot, import defensive back LaVar Glover, import quarterback Cody Kirby and import K/P Louie Sakoda have all been released.
Barnes spent the past two seasons with the green and gold. He started 12 games last season hauling in 35 catches for 608 yards and three touchdowns. He suffered a ruptured spleen and bruised kidney and lung in the October 8 game in Hamilton and spent the rest of the season on the injured list. The former Sacramento State receiver’s release was not related to his previous injuries.
Borhot was selected by Edmonton in the 2nd round (12th overall) in the 2010 CFL Canadian Draft and played in five games (four starts) last year before spending the rest of the season on the injured list.
Glover, Kirby and Sakoda all signed as free agents with the Eskimos this spring.
Eskimo GM Eric Tillman says, “In each situation these moves should be viewed as precautionary judgment calls. And, in Jason Barnes case, our medical staff feels he is fully recovered from the spleen injury he suffered in Hamilton. His progress in that regard has been outstanding, and we’re all thankful for that, but, this judgment call today was based on concerns pertaining to separate issue. That said, we certainly believe Jason will be playing professional football again in the not too distant future.”
