Eskimo Kicker Derek Schiavone recruited some of his CFL friends for a Pros vs Joes event at his former elementary school in Fort Erie, Ontario where he is finishing his teaching placement.
On the morning of Friday, May 6, Schiavone will be joined by Tyler Scott (Eskimos), Noel Prefontaine (Argos), Chad Rempel (Argos), Chris Greaves (Blue Bombers) and John Surla (2011 Draft Prospect) at Our Lady of Victory Catholic School to talk to the Grade 4-8 students about the importance of education and healthy living. Each player will discuss how education has played an important role in their journey as a professional athlete.
“Growing up in a small town like Fort Erie, there is limited opportunity. I want these kids to know that even though they come from a small town, it is possible for your dreams to become a reality. However, it takes hard work and determination,” says Schiavone.
For the last week, students in grades six, seven and eight have competed in a punt, pass and kick competition. The winner from each grade will join the CFL players in a Pros vs. Joes flag football game that afternoon against school staff.
“I believe this event will have a positive impact on each student and will be a memory they hold on to for some time,” says Schiavone. “My time at OLV has been amazing and I felt this would be a great way to give back to the school and community that means so much to me.”
Schiavone thanks Grand Niagara Golf Resort and Head Golf Pro Bob Culig for donating passes for the CFL players involved in this event. Their donation and participation in this event is very much appreciated.
