Edmonton Eskimos
Kylee’s Blog – Eskimo Cheer Team
Monday night’s initial audition session went by quickly as the remaining 50 dancers learned the audition dance at Perfect Storm Athletics. As a rookie, I remember only too well how important it was to stand out in some way so the judging panel and the coaches would remember me in the sea of prospective Eskimo cheerleaders. It was a huge deal to decide exactly what dance outfit would make me memorable, and I counted on recalling every little trick I learned at dance conventions over the years in order to prove I deserved a spot on this elite Cheer Team. Even though most of us have trained in our dance disciplines for many years, you still hope that you won’t freeze for that split second when you realize the eyes of the judges are scrutinizing you. As a performer, we know we have to lose the nerves and pick up the dance steps, or at the very least do a really good job convincing the judges that we actually know what we are doing, and that we definitely deserve a position on the new team.
I am ready for Sunday’s public audition at Edmonton City Centre Mall. I love performing and I feed off the energy of the crowd. Furthermore, I truly believe a public audition is a great way to discern if the rookies can handle the pressure of dancing in front of a far bigger audience, considering our Eskimo Football games draw around 35,000 fans per game.
I have loved every second of the two years I have been an Eskimo Cheerleader, but I am a little sad to know that some of the people I performed with for those two years have decided to retire. The Cheer Team is so well managed that it becomes one big family, and we all truly like and care about each other. However, I do believe the saying that we saw when we toured the locker room at Commonwealth Stadium, `Once an Eskimo, Always an Eskimo´.
I would like to wish everyone the best of luck at the audition on Sunday. Remember to smile, breathe, and most of all, enjoy yourself!
